Reflections on Psychedelic Science 2023
The critical examination of access, affordability, and reciprocity were key themes at Psychedelic Science 2023. Our community has been asked to consider the legacy of colonial and extractive systems, particularly as they impact the Global South and Indigenous ceremony and communities in our work. As a community, we must ensure that psychedelics do not become another space of exclusion for people of color and all those who have been denied equity in society.

Melissa Etheridge
Addiction, family, plant medicine, and healing
In this session, Grammy-winning artist Melissa Etheridge shares her personal story of family addiction struggles, loss, healing, and transformation through plant medicines. Melissa addresses both the science and spiritual connections that led her to found the Etheridge Foundation, funding research into plant medicine treatments for opioid use disorder. From devastation and grief to a powerful determination to create access to more effective treatments for addiction, Melissa's cause is one of love and hope.

Tempering Psychedelics: A Conversation with Michael Pollan and Bob Jesse
Michael Pollan is a renowned author and investigative journalist whose work explores the intersection of culture, nature, and consciousness. His 2018 book, “How to Change Your Mind,” catalyzed a new wave of interest in the field of psychedelic research. Always nuanced, insightful, and entertaining, Pollan has become the go-to figure for anyone seeking to understand the potential risks and benefits of these substances. Bob Jesse is a guiding force behind the contemporary re-emergence of psychedelics. In the mid-90s, he convened an expert group, the Council on Spiritual Practices, which was instrumental in forming the psilocybin research team at Johns Hopkins. Jesse co-authored that team's influential first study (2006) and has led the drafting of foundational documents: a Code of Ethics for Spiritual Guides (1995), an amicus brief for the U.S. Supreme Court (2005) in a successful religious liberty case, and a Statement on Open Science (2017) signed by numerous leaders in psychedelics. He has served on several boards in the field. Previously, Jesse trained at Hopkins in engineering, consulted for AT&T Bell Labs, and worked at Oracle Corp. as a VP of business development. At Bell Labs and at Oracle, his advocacy initiatives led to marked advances for lesbian and gay employees and their families. Currently, he continues to advise and collaborate with individuals and groups in the psychedelics space.

Opening Dinner Honoring Roland R. Griffiths, Ph.D.
Recorded June 21, 2023 at the Psychedelic Science Conference in Denver, Colorado. Attendees gathered to honor Roland R. Griffiths, PhD, Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Neurosciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and founding Director of the Johns Hopkins Center on Psychedelic and Consciousness Research. The evening included a three-course meal featuring speeches from the colleagues and allies who have worked with Dr. Griffiths across his illustrious and illuminating career. In 1999, building on a long career of pharmacological research, Dr. Griffiths opened a new era in psychedelic science with a series of groundbreaking studies examining the usage of psilocybin for spiritual and therapeutic purposes, yielding its first landmark publication in 2006. Over the last 16 years, Dr. Griffiths and his team have published over 144 peer-reviewed articles about psychedelics in respected scientific journals. This research has led to a widespread reconsideration of the potential of psychedelics in the fields of science and medicine, and inspired a new generation of researchers to follow in his footsteps. In 2020, Dr. Griffiths founded the Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research with $17m in philanthropic funding, establishing the first permanent center for psychedelic research in North America. In 2022, Dr. Griffiths announced that he had been diagnosed with Stage IV cancer. He has recently begun to share his thoughts on mortality and his hope for the continued inquiry into the potential of psychedelics for spiritual growth, while continuing to write forthcoming scientific publications.

Psychedelics: Spirituality, Mindfulness, and Mortality – Personal reflections and visions for the future
Recorded June 22, 2023 at the Psychedelic Science Conference in Denver, Colorado. Roland Griffiths, Ph.D., is Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Neurosciences and Founding Director of the Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His principal research focus in both clinical and preclinical laboratories has been on the behavioral and subjective effects of mood-altering drugs and he is author of over 400 scientific publications and has trained more than 50 postdoctoral research fellows. About 20 years ago, he initiated a research program investigating effects of the classic psychedelic substance psilocybin. Completed and ongoing studies include those in healthy volunteers, in beginning and long-term meditators, and in religious leaders. Therapeutic studies with psilocybin include treatment of psychological distress in cancer patients, major depressive disorder, nicotine addiction, anorexia nervosa, and several other psychiatric disorders. Related studies of brain imaging and drug interactions are examining pharmacological and neural mechanisms of action. His research group has also conducted a series of survey studies characterizing and comparing various naturally-occurring and psychedelic experiences resulting in enduring changes in beliefs, attitudes, moods, and behavior.

Priorities for the next generation of psychedelic science
Over the last decade, interest in the study of psychedelic drugs has grown tremendously, yielding a new generation of research centers, clinical trials, and neuroscience studies. In response to this growing wave of inquiry, in November of 2022, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) issued a notice outlining its priorities and criteria for new grant applications related to the study of psychedelic drugs, emphasizing a need for deeper research into underlying mechanisms, as well as more robust study designs in clinical and translational research. In this session, NIMH Director Joshua A. Gordon, M.D., Ph.D. and trauma researcher and NIMH grant recipient Barbara O. Rothbaum, Ph.D. of Emory University discuss the strengths and weaknesses of latest wave of psychedelic research, and what we hope to learn from the next generation of rigorous investigations into the neurobiology and therapeautic applications of psychedelic drugs.

The state of the psychedelic sector
This talk aims to provide a rapid introduction to the state of the nascent psychedelic sector, fertilising the ground for more substantive discussions on this track. Helped along by data visualisations, Hardman surveys the financial, research and policy contexts in which psychedelic businesses are embedded; and, increasingly, are shaping. The talk finishes by reviewing a number of open questions surrounding the future of the psychedelic sector, from its unfolding clinical evidence base to its commercial viability.

TREAT CALIFORNIA-Providing $5 Billion to Fund Psychedelic Research and Therapies
TREAT California, a citizen-led ballot initiative, will revolutionize mental healthcare in California by safely and ethically harnessing the power of psychedelic medicines. Following the roadmap of the highly successful stem cell agency (also formed by ballot initiative), it will establish the largest psychedelic funding agency in the world. The TREAT Institute will be funded with $5 Billion for research and affordable access to these powerful medicines. Come learn about this initiative, how we will deliver on the potential for psychedelic medicines to heal without ‘medicalizing’ them, how we will provide these therapies to all Californians in need (regardless of ability to pay), how this funding agency will be different from a typical government agency, and why decriminalization is not enough. We have a remarkable and realistic opportunity to achieve the single most significant expansion of treatments and therapies applicable to mental health and addiction in generations.

Amplifying the Wisdom of Psychedelic Elders
Founded as an organization open to all genders, the Women's Visionary Council (WVC) is placing a special focus on elders and the transfer of knowledge between generations. While psychedelic communities in the Western world are composed largely of younger people, elders bring balance, clarity and insights drawn from years of experience. They consider the long-term impact of decisions about psychedelic compounds on vulnerable groups and support pragmatic approaches to the resolution of conflict. As the rapid growth of psychedelic companies and organizations enter a new phase, informed advice and reflection from elders is increasingly needed to light the path forward. The WVC will host a panel discussion with five elders, including three from its board of directors. The conversation will also highlight the work of other elders in psychedelic communities who have made significant contributions as spiritual leaders, trusted healers, mature artists, and seasoned activists.
