Reflections on Psychedelic Science 2023
The critical examination of access, affordability, and reciprocity were key themes at Psychedelic Science 2023. Our community has been asked to consider the legacy of colonial and extractive systems, particularly as they impact the Global South and Indigenous ceremony and communities in our work. As a community, we must ensure that psychedelics do not become another space of exclusion for people of color and all those who have been denied equity in society.

Melissa Etheridge
Addiction, family, plant medicine, and healing
In this session, Grammy-winning artist Melissa Etheridge shares her personal story of family addiction struggles, loss, healing, and transformation through plant medicines. Melissa addresses both the science and spiritual connections that led her to found the Etheridge Foundation, funding research into plant medicine treatments for opioid use disorder. From devastation and grief to a powerful determination to create access to more effective treatments for addiction, Melissa's cause is one of love and hope.

Tempering Psychedelics: A Conversation with Michael Pollan and Bob Jesse
Michael Pollan is a renowned author and investigative journalist whose work explores the intersection of culture, nature, and consciousness. His 2018 book, “How to Change Your Mind,” catalyzed a new wave of interest in the field of psychedelic research. Always nuanced, insightful, and entertaining, Pollan has become the go-to figure for anyone seeking to understand the potential risks and benefits of these substances. Bob Jesse is a guiding force behind the contemporary re-emergence of psychedelics. In the mid-90s, he convened an expert group, the Council on Spiritual Practices, which was instrumental in forming the psilocybin research team at Johns Hopkins. Jesse co-authored that team's influential first study (2006) and has led the drafting of foundational documents: a Code of Ethics for Spiritual Guides (1995), an amicus brief for the U.S. Supreme Court (2005) in a successful religious liberty case, and a Statement on Open Science (2017) signed by numerous leaders in psychedelics. He has served on several boards in the field. Previously, Jesse trained at Hopkins in engineering, consulted for AT&T Bell Labs, and worked at Oracle Corp. as a VP of business development. At Bell Labs and at Oracle, his advocacy initiatives led to marked advances for lesbian and gay employees and their families. Currently, he continues to advise and collaborate with individuals and groups in the psychedelics space.

Why I Am Giving $100m to the Psychedelic Movement
Blake Mycoskie is a serial entrepreneur, philanthropist, and best-selling author most known for founding TOMS Shoes and is the person behind the idea of One for One®, a business model that helps a person in need with every product purchased. A simple idea grew into a global movement: While traveling in Argentina in 2006, Blake witnessed the hardships faced by children growing up without shoes. His solution to the problem was simple, yet revolutionary: to create a for-profit business that was sustainable and not reliant on donations. Blake’s vision soon turned into the simple business idea that provided the powerful foundation for TOMS. Since its inception, TOMS Shoes has provided almost 96 million pairs of shoes to children around the globe. In the Spring of 2020, Blake co-founded his newest company, Madefor. Madefor helps people learn and sustain positive habits and practices that have the greatest impact on their lives. Born and raised in Texas, Blake now resides in Northern California with his family and dog. In his free time, you can find him outside enjoying nature or racing cars.

A Conversation with Andrew Huberman
Andrew Huberman, Ph.D., is a neuroscientist and tenured professor in the department of neurobiology, and by courtesy, psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford School of Medicine. He has made numerous significant contributions to the fields of brain development, brain function and neural plasticity, which is the ability of our nervous system to rewire and learn new behaviors, skills and cognitive functioning. Huberman is a McKnight Foundation and Pew Foundation Fellow and was awarded the Cogan Award, given to the scientist making the most significant discoveries in the study of vision, in 2017. His lab’s most recent work focuses on the influence of vision and respiration on human performance and brain states such as fear and courage. He also works on neural regeneration and directs a clinical trial to promote visual restoration in diseases that cause blindness. Huberman is also actively involved in developing tools now in use by the elite military in the U.S. and Canada, athletes, and technology industries to optimize performance in high stress environments, enhance neural plasticity, mitigate stress and optimize sleep. Work from the Huberman Laboratory at Stanford School of Medicine has been published in top journals including Nature, Science and Cell and has been featured in TIME, BBC, Scientific American, Discover and other top media outlets. In 2021, Dr. Huberman launched the Huberman Lab podcast. The podcast is frequently ranked in the top 10 of all podcasts globally and is often ranked #1 in the categories of Science, Education, and Health & Fitness.

Psilocybin Mushrooms and their Tryptamines: Potential Medicines for Neurogeneration
The recent upsurge in interest in psilocybin mushrooms by the scientific community is attributable to their long use in history, their widespread use today, and the increasing number of clinical studies validating psilocybin as a breakthrough medicine. What is not yet well elucidated is the efficacy of microdosing and the mechanisms of action for neurogenesis and neurogeneration. Paul will briefly speak of their historical use and then explore psilocybin's potential for neurological health based on our recent results on molecular modes of action our team has discovered. As co-founder of MycoMedica Life Sciences, PBC (www.mycomedica.com) , which has raised $ 60 million, his team is well positioned for conducting clinical studies based, in part, on the 3 composition patents recently awarded to Paul on his psilocybin discoveries.

The State of Psychedelic Research Since 2017
The science of psychedelics has come a long way since Drs. Summergrad and Insel met on our stage in 2017. Research into psychedelics has boomed, but six years later fundamental questions remain about mechanisms, efficacy, and policy. Are psychedelics medications for people with a diagnosis or agents to facilitate personal growth? What does the science tell us about benefits and risks? What do we know about the role of psychotherapy or practitioner training ? How should these compounds be regulated? Are there conditions or circumstances that increase the risk of adverse outcomes? Does FDA approval matter? How important is deep experience for providers? And if so, what types of experiences matter? In this session, two of the nation’s psychiatric thought leaders will discuss these questions and more.

An old new dream: rebuilding society in the light of mystical insight
In this talk, we’ll explore how our transpersonal experiences can inform and catalyze desirable futures. How might our relationship with the sacred compel us toward new approaches to our livelihoods and communities? How can our evolving collective consciousness guide us in the formidable task of redesigning global power structures, to co-create more sacred, inclusive economies, polities, media, technologies, and AIs? Justin Rosenstein is the co-founder of One Project, an initiative working globally with communities to design, implement, and scale new forms of governance and economics that are equitable, ecological, and effective. Previously he co-founded Asana, Google Drive, and other technology initiatives.

Surviving NXIVM, cults, and sexual violence: A story of abuse, healing, and ketamine-assisted therapy retreats
The highest population of people with PTSD are women survivors of sexual assault. Catherine Oxenberg’s daughter India had joined the NXIVM cult and was a member for seven years. There, she was a victim of the cult leader, a sexual predator targeting hundreds of young women. The cult leader was ultimately prosecuted and jailed with a 120-year sentence. However, as with India, the scars persist long after the predator is apprehended. While many survivors struggle to break free from the enduring neurobiological and psychological damage caused by sexual violence, traditional treatment models often fall short. The Catherine Oxenberg Foundation has made its mission to support survivors of sexual assault suffering from PTSD. Recently, they hosted their first intensive 11-day KAP (ketamine-assisted psychotherapy) retreat with six cult survivors, including India. Catherine and India will share their journey of rebuilding their lives after the cult and making it their mission to bring healing to as many deserving women as possible.

How Colorado is Building a Careful Revolution in Psychedelic Healing
The November 2022 passage of the Natural Medicine Health Act (Prop. 122) in Colorado made the state the first in the nation to open up pathways for regulated access to four natural psychedelic medicines - psilocybin, ayahuasca, non-peyote mescaline, and ibogaine. Flourish Trust founder and Coloradan Christiana Musk interviews Colorado Senate President Stephen Fenberg about the first steps in this groundbreaking process, one ripe with incredible opportunities for healing and many complex questions still to be answered.
