The Mazatec Sierra and the sacred mushrooms: Past and present
The Mazatec people of southern Mexico had quietly practiced healing ceremonies with psilocybin mushrooms for centuries, which were infamously exposed by the 1957 Life Magazine article. The subsequent flood of unwanted visitors to Sierra Mazateca in the 1960s and 1970s had many unintended consequences, complicating the lives and traditions of the local community. The latest psychedelic revival may prove yet more complex, bringing not only tourism and media, but also intellectual property claims over psilocybin. This session is an opportunity to hear directly from members of the Mazatec community and their allies.
