The Dances of Universal Peace are simple, meditative, joyous, and multi-cultural circle dances that use sacred phrases, chants, music, and movements from many spiritual traditions. No musical or dance experience is necessary.
They were first presented in the late 1960s in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco and are now spread to almost 40 countries.
The Dance Leader sings, demonstrates the prayer, and accompanies herself with an instrument. (I will bring and play my ukulele.) Sometimes there are drummers, guitarists, flutists, and other melodic instruments in the center of the circle.
Throughout their time together, the leader teaches the group the words, melody, and movement before each Dance. Themes for the Dances include love, peace, healing, and the celebration of life’s great mystery.
